While in Guatemala I had the opportunity to spend 24 hours in a drug and alcohol detox center. Most of these men are brought here against their will and they are not allowed to leave the building for 6 months, sometimes a year, sometimes more. Basically they are not allowed out until they are sober. They are kept busy throughout the day with chores, cleaning, cooking, and prayer services daily. Family members are encouraged to visit regularly, some do, and some don't. I did not know what to expect when I decided to stay overnight with the guys, but after cooking with them, cleaning with them, and photographing them for a day, I can honestly say that I left their with a few more friends than I had when I entered. People are people no matter where you are, just talk to them and you'll see.
